Laminate Installation
Laminate is a smart choice when you want a floor that holds up to daily wear, keeps its colour reliably in bright rooms, and delivers a crisp wood look with strong scratch and dent resistance. The key to a great laminate install is not complicated, but it is specific: subfloor prep, moisture planning, the right underlay, and clean finishing details.
Laminate performs best when the base is flat, the moisture plan is right, and the boards have room to move at the edges.

How We Plan Installs
- Start with the room and the lifestyle. Laminate is a strong fit for active homes, pets, and everyday traffic where scratch and dent resistance matter.
- Confirm the subfloor. Laminate wants a dry, sound, relatively flat base. Flatness matters for the feel, the sound, and how the joints perform over time.
- Moisture planning first. Laminate can react to moisture, so we plan vapour management based on the subfloor type and the room conditions.
- Sound and comfort planning. Laminate can feel firm underfoot, and in some rooms, it can sound more “clicky” if the underlay and site conditions are not right. We plan the underlay and finishing details to achieve a quieter, more solid feel.
- Tell us where the laminate is going and what is below it (concrete or wood subfloor). That drives the prep and underlay plan.
Premium Details That Read “Custom”
- Cleaner transitions. Thoughtful thresholds and trims keep the home feeling continuous and reduce weak points at doorways.
- Consistent board layout. A professional install avoids repeated “stair step” patterns and creates a natural, random look. Layout is visual, and you notice it immediately when it is done poorly.
- Blended cartons for natural variation. Working from multiple boxes at once helps the floor look balanced across the room.
- Pressed bevel and edge detail planning. Many premium laminates use deeper, more natural-looking bevels. Clean cuts and careful fit at walls, vents, and transitions help those details look intentional.
- Share photos of long hallways, large open rooms, and any areas where you want fewer transitions. We can plan for that early.
Moisture, Spills, and Long-term Results
Laminate handles daily life well, but it still needs a realistic moisture plan.
What we set expectations around:
- Spills: Prompt clean-up matters. The floor can withstand normal use, but leaving standing water in place is not a good idea.
- Moisture from below: Concrete and below-grade areas require special attention to moisture management.
- Colour stability: One major advantage is UV stability. Laminate tends to hold its colour very well over time compared with many other surfaces.
- The “3 C’s” vapour barrier rule of thumb: Concrete, Cottages, Crawl spaces.
If one of those applies, we plan for a vapour barrier solution, then confirm the final requirement based on the specific product instructions.
Instructions in the box are requirements, not suggestions. If anything is unclear, we will confirm it before install day.
If your laminate is going on concrete, in a cottage, or over a crawl space, tell us up front. We will build the right moisture plan. We also recommend 24-hours of acclimatization at home before installing.
The 10-step Installation Checklist
-
1. Site readiness:
Temperature and humidity stable, HVAC running, space cleared.
-
2. Subfloor review:
Wood or concrete assessed for stability and smoothness.
-
3. Flatness check:
We confirm the surface meets the product requirements (a common guideline is 3/16 inch over 10 feet, but it can vary by manufacturer).
-
4. Moisture checks:
Moisture evaluated where required, plan documented.
-
5. Vapour barrier plan:
Selected based on subfloor and room conditions, then matched to the product requirements.
-
6. Underlay plan:
Correct underlay chosen for sound, comfort, and performance.
-
7. Layout sign-off:
Plank direction, sightlines, seam distribution, and transition locations confirmed.
-
8. Expansion plan:
Perimeter gaps and long runs are planned to allow the floor to move naturally through seasons.
-
9. Finishing details:
Vents, trims, thresholds, and stair details planned before boards go in.
-
10. Final QA:
Joints checked, floor protected, care plan reviewed.
What to Expect During Installation
We start by confirming subfloor conditions, especially flatness and moisture. Laminate is a floating floor, so it depends on the base being right. Once prep is complete, the focus shifts to clean joint engagement, consistent staggering, and crisp finishing details at all edges and transitions.
Schedule a pre-install walkthrough. It keeps expectations clear and prevents last-minute changes.
Installation Tips
How to prep for install (your part)
• Clear the space and provide a staging area for materials.
• Keep pets contained, and pathways open on install days.
• Remove fragile items from nearby shelves and walls.
• Plan for limited access while installation and trim work are completed.
• Keep a small amount of attic stock for future repairs.
Aftercare & simple maintenance
• Sweep or vacuum regularly to reduce grit.
• Use felt pads and wide furniture glides.
• Wipe spills promptly.
• Use approved cleaners such as Finitec laminate cleaner and avoid excess water.
• Use mats at exterior doors to reduce abrasion over time.
Ready to plan a flawless install?
• Confirm subfloor type and moisture risk.
• Choose the right underlay for sound and comfort.
• Plan layout and transitions so the result looks consistent across the home.
