Materials in Plain Language

  • Solid hardwood. Typically, a traditional 3/4" plank. Solid wood can be problematic over concrete without a built-up subfloor system, and warranty limits vary by manufacturer and by grade. Solid hardwood is generally not recommended for basements and is typically not suitable over radiant heat.
  • Engineered hardwood. A real-wood surface supported by layered construction. Seasonal movement can still occur, but core construction and grain orientation can significantly improve stability. Engineered is often a strong fit for wider and longer planks, radiant heat, and homes with bigger humidity swings, including coastal conditions.
  • Core construction: Not all engineered wood is built the same. Core type affects stability, dent resistance, and the floor's behaviour over time. In plain terms, engineered wood layers are designed to work against each other to reduce movement, rather than letting a single piece of wood move freely.
  • Wear layer, in practical terms. The thickness of the real-wood top layer determines how much sanding will be possible in the future. Some engineered floors are built for limited refinishing, while others can support multiple refinishes.
